This release changes how GitHub stars are recorded, and fixes data loss in Plausible backfills, large GitHub re-fetches and daily metric files.

Upgrade notes

  • Stars come from GitHub’s star history. Since July 2026, GitHub only lists the stargazers of repositories your token can administer or collaborate on, so stars silently stopped being recorded for every other repository. velocirepo now reads the star history endpoint, which works for any repository:
    • daily_stars is a metric record now, not an aggregate of star events. GitHub’s days end in US Pacific time, and each fetch re-reads the last 7 days, since stars that are removed again lower the count of their day.
    • Star events are no longer fetched. Existing ones stay in the events view, but the metrics view no longer counts them as daily_stars, which would count stars twice.
    • The first fetch after upgrading reads the whole star history of each repository once. That takes about one request per 30 weeks of history; for 465 repositories it was about 7,700 requests.
    • total_stars records the star count GitHub reports on each fetch. The stars badge shows the latest total_stars of each repository.
  • GitHub comments are listed by last update. GitHub serves at most 300 pages of a repository’s comments, so a long re-fetch of a busy repository failed and stored nothing. Comments created before the fetch window but edited in it are still skipped, but are now read.
  • Daily metric files are merged, not replaced. Writing records for a day kept only the new ones, so a fetch that covers only some of a day’s series dropped the others.
  • Plausible breakdowns are sorted. A backfill spanning more than one page of 10,000 rows could repeat some rows and miss others. Nightly runs fit on one page.

Repairing existing data

  • Re-fetch Plausible ranges that were backfilled over more than one page of results, e.g. velocirepo fetch-plausible --start-date <start> --end-date <end>.
  • If a full GitHub re-fetch left a large repository without history, re-fetch it with velocirepo fetch-github --project <id> --start-date <first date>.
  • daily_stars backfills itself on the first fetch. A fetch that’s already up to date skips that project, so use --start-date <yesterday> to start it the same day.

Upgrade notes

  • fetch now exits non-zero when any job fails, after storing what the other jobs fetched. Add if: ${{ !cancelled() }} to your workflow’s “Commit and push” step. Without it, a day on which any source fails commits nothing. Workflows generated by install-ci from this version include it.
  • Warnings are shown by default (for example, a project that couldn’t be compacted).
  • Plausible is fetched through the day before yesterday, so each day is complete in the site’s time zone. Expect a two-day pause after upgrading.
  • Badges: downloads is the all-time sum of daily_downloads (PyPI, CRAN), and pageviews the sum of daily_site_pageviews. Both rendered <nil> before.
  • MCP: query caps limit at 10000, and export only writes inside the project directory.
  • Installers: install.sh and the GitHub Action verify the archive against SHA256SUMS.

Repairing existing data

Earlier versions compacted months whose last day was missing (CRAN lost the last day of every month), and recorded GitHub closes and merges only for items opened the same day. After upgrading:

  • Find month-end gaps with the query in docs/review/2026-10-correctness-review.md (§7), and re-fetch each missing day, e.g. velocirepo fetch-cran --start-date 2026-07-31 --end-date 2026-07-31. Late data is now merged into compacted months.
  • Run velocirepo fetch-github --start-date <first tracked date> once to recover the missed closes and merges.
  • Re-fetch Plausible history to replace partial days. Re-fetched values replace the stored ones.
