# Numbered Citations

Literate programming was introduced by Knuth <span class="citation" cites="knuth1984">\[[1](#ref-knuth1984)\]</span>, and LaTeX by Lamport <span class="citation" cites="lamport1994">\[[2](#ref-lamport1994)\]</span>. With a numeric CSL, these render as bracketed numbers rather than author-year text.
